[19:39:50] * Playback of 'recap.txt' complete
[19:41:47] <+Seth> ::Morning finds him nursing his usual cup of black bean tea in the great hall awaiting the return of the other lords and the resumption of the daily court::
[19:41:57] <.Bynw> *the harbormaster has reported that the ships started to return to port at dawn. none of them had any trouble, even in places that previous had trouble.*
[19:42:08] * +Ryethon returns to the palace after an early visit to the harbor.
[19:42:22] * +Jack also returns from the harbor.
[19:42:29] * +Charissa heads to the great hall
[19:42:58] * +Ryethon walks into the great hall with a mug of black bean tea, and a pot of the same.
[19:43:02] * +Coch enters the Great Hall
[19:45:09] <+Coch> "Good morning everybody"
[19:45:26] <+Charissa> "Good morning"
[19:46:25] <+Seth> ::Looks up with a pair of red eyes over the brim of his cup:: "Uh huh...returning from the harbor?"
[19:47:13] * +Ryethon sets the pot of tea infront of seth.
[19:47:16] <+Coch> "It appear Seafort's dredging has cleared the harbor for use"
[19:47:42] <+Charissa> "that's great news"
[19:47:45] <+Jack> "Yeah, it's even better than it was before the storm."
[19:48:33] * otter is now known as Kevin
[19:48:42] <+Ryethon> "Careful though, it might start walking around if you let it set too long."
[19:50:49] * +Kevin walks in late and says, "Good morning."
[19:50:59] <+Seth> ::Gives a warm smile to Ryethon as he refreshes his cup from the pot:: "Thank you General. This is gold to an older man, in the morning."
[19:51:43] * +Ryethon reaches in a pocket and pulls out a bottle of strong wisky, and pours a little in Seth's cup.
[19:52:04] <+Seth> ::Smiles devilishly::
[19:52:21] <+Ryethon> "That'll help you after a long night of "negotiating"."
[19:53:04] <+Seth> "So, if I am to handle negotiations with Master Seafort, what other business do we have? The Army?"
[19:53:24] <+Charissa> "aye."
[19:54:36] <.Bynw> *constable adrian sprax enters the great hall and bows at the next before the queen and then joins Lord Seth*  "The mercenaries will be arriving in 3 days time."
[19:55:30] <+Seth> ::Actually grins at the news:: "Excellent Marshal. As always your help proves invaluable."
[19:56:02] * +Kevin sits at the table and drinks some orange juice
[19:57:05] <+Seth> "Well General Ryethon it seems you will have your hands full. May I suggest an idea on recruitment?"
[19:57:19] <+Ryethon> "Feel free to."
[19:58:14] <.Bynw> *Adrian* "I too have a suggestion my Lord"
[19:58:25] <+Seth> "I suggest we employ a policy of manditory time in the army for our citizens."
[19:58:33] <+Seth> ::Looks to Adrian::
[20:00:27] <.Bynw> "I'm all for a conscription and manditory service .. but we should do so quietly. The mercenaries should arrive quietly as well. If some of our neighbors see us building an army they may take advantage of us while we are underprepared."
[20:00:30] <.Bynw> *he says*
[20:02:05] <+Ryethon> "This is quite true."
[20:03:32] <+Kevin> "Aye."
[20:03:34] <+Coch> "How many mercenaries are we expecting to arrive?"
[20:03:56] <.Bynw> *Adrian* "A score"
[20:04:42] <+Ryethon> "Very good."
[20:07:08] <+Charissa> "how many years should we say for the conscription?  Two?"
[20:08:00] <+Ryethon> "That is a nice short time. I can not see anyone having any trouble with it."
[20:08:11] <+Seth> "Any more then one and we may have problems bringing in a crop I think, unless we rotate the men in and out."
[20:09:13] <+Charissa> "we need time to train them and one year may not be enough to train and get them to mesh as a unit"
[20:10:50] * +Kevin nods
[20:12:25] * +Seth nods
[20:12:54] <+Ryethon> "It depends on how rigorous the training is. But the minimum would be a year and a half."
[20:15:17] <+Seth> "We can run a conscription army as well as a regular force. Incentive for the regular force is that if lands are taken while in service some of them will be given over to those who helped win them, but only for regular army forces."
[20:17:21] <+Charissa> "that makes sense"
[20:18:06] <+Ryethon> "Promotion should be an incentive for transfering to the regulars."
[20:19:43] <+Charissa> "aye.  Another advantage of a conscription army is that we will have citizens who are better trained to help defend their own homes."
[20:19:45] <+Seth> "Yes that as well. Of course only regular army can hold positions of authority."
[20:20:49] <+Kevin> "Very good idea."
[20:21:43] <+Ryethon> "Also a widows and orphan's fund."
[20:23:07] <+Charissa> "aye.  We need to ensure future generations would be willing to join the army"
[20:23:17] <+Kevin> "Aye."
[20:24:02] <+Coch> "Maybe we should waive taxes for those in the regular army?  That would be another incentive to join."
[20:24:33] <+Ryethon> "That would be a good idea also."
[20:25:32] <+Charissa> "or lower them.  We don't need a kingdom full of army troops and no farm or dock workers."
[20:25:39] <+Seth> "Widows can train in basic battlefield medicine. Orphans can do clean up work."
[20:26:30] <+Seth> "We'll need taxes. Levy land owners for a certain number of surfs based on land owned. Serfs pay no taxes anyways."
[20:27:53] <+Seth> ::Looks to the Queen and chuckles:: "We can't have some grunt ordering our wealthy land owners around anyways, they'd revolt."
[20:27:57] <+Coch> "We can always set a limit on the size of the army and create demand to be in the army.  That way we can select the best people for the regulars"
[20:30:22] <+Kevin> "What would it be? Around 10% of the population?"
[20:31:47] <+Charissa> "no more than that."
[20:32:26] <+Jack> "Not even that much in the beginning if you don't want the neighbors to notice."
[20:32:37] <+Seth> "Between a certain age I would say."
[20:33:38] <+Seth> ::Nods to Jack:: "Yes I believe Lord Jack and Marshal Sprax are right, discretion is needed here."
[20:35:57] <+Ryethon> "The first order would be to have them doing repair work, an army may be for defense, but they must be able to do other things."
[20:37:28] <+Kevin> "In between training, or as training?"
[20:37:42] <+Ryethon> "Both."
[20:37:47] <+Seth> ::Nods to Ryethon:: "You are Warp Woods General Master Ryethon, you may train them as you see fit. Just so long as they are prepared to defend our new trade road as it is being built."
[20:37:49] <+Jack> "Yes, both."
[20:41:50] <.Bynw> *Adrian* "Well I have do have other duties that need attending to my lords." *he says as he gets up and heads for the door*
[20:42:08] <+Seth> ::Nods to Adrian as he leaves::
[20:43:08] <+Seth> "I trust in your discretion General Ryethon. I think it is time I sent word to Master Seafort that I am ready to negotiate our trade agreement."
[20:43:37] <+Seth> "And what of our problem with the Maxim?"
[20:45:11] <+Ryethon> "To root them out directly may be a grevious mistake."
[20:45:49] <+Kevin> "Are there any attempts for diplomacy on record."
[20:46:40] <+Jack> Hmmm . . . now that things are pretty stable, it might be a good time to make my trip to Polaris and see what anyone there knows of the Maxim.
[20:47:40] <+Seth> ::Nods to Lord Jack and Lord Kevin:: "Perhaps the local chapter could be convinced to help in our defense as well?"
[20:47:52] <+Jack> "I really need to fill them in on what I'm up to in any case."
[20:48:58] <+Seth> ::His eyebrows knit together in concern:: "They will not interfere in our operations will they Lord Jack?"
[20:50:41] <.Bynw> *the doors burst open, a dripping wet Chadwick enters the great hall without some much as a nod or bow of respect for any office* "Have you seen the harbor?"
[20:51:17] <+Jack> "Actually yes, I was there about two hours ago."
[20:52:00] <+Ryethon> "Good morning Master Chadwick."
[20:52:07] <+Seth> ::He sneers as the unwashed and rude man enters and quickly covers it by taking a drink of his tea::
[20:52:12] <+Jack> "I gather you don't consider ti an improbement, Master Chadwick."
[20:52:32] <.Bynw> *Chadwick looks at Jack* "Not standing on the docks fool. I mean have you seen the harbor ... the land under the water."
[20:53:13] <+Jack> "Ummm . . . no, I don't have that kind of gift."
[20:53:28] <+Ryethon> "Let me guess, it is scraped clean  to the rocks?"
[20:54:15] <+Seth> ::Looks to Chadwick with a look of impaitence:: "It has been tampered with, we are aware of that. Is something wrong?"
[20:54:22] <.Bynw> *chadwick* "You should learn to swim." *he turns to Ryethon* "In someplaces it has been. And I don't like the looks of it."
[20:55:00] <+Charissa> "why not Chadwick?"
[20:55:20] <+Seth> ::Sneers again and takes a drink of his tea::
[20:56:46] <.Bynw> "Wrong? ... Wrong! ... Of course there is something wrong. The balance has been disturbed, one must be careful when the land is damaged ... she will take back what is hers." *he turns and leaves* "I shall consult with my brothers on this foul disturbance." *and slams the door shut*
[20:57:39] <+Seth> ::He makes a foul jester at the closed doors meaning it for the druid::
[20:58:14] <+Jack> "Hmmm . . . if he's that upset about the harbor, wait till he finds out about the road."
[20:58:32] <+Charissa> "true."
[20:58:38] <+Seth> "I'm sure we'll all be up all night thinking about the dirt worshipper and his portents of doom."
[20:59:00] <+Ryethon> "It might be good to have him involved in the discussions."
[20:59:31] <+Coch> "If he was that concerned his people should have cleared the harbor for us"
[20:59:37] <+Seth> ::His eyes widen and he looks at Ryethon with disbelief:: "How are we going to do that?"
[21:00:06] <+Jack> "Yeah, I don't really want our army's first war to be against our own druids."
[21:00:31] <+Seth> "The bug ridden man comes and goes as he pleases and lives a days march in those cursed marshes. We don't even have a way to contact him."
[21:02:42] <+Ryethon> "If we wanted to talk with him, he would know."
[21:03:04] <+Jack> "I think we need to talk to him."
[21:03:31] <+Seth> ::he speaks in latin, an obvious insult:: "Nequissium et periurum capat!"
[21:05:06] <+Ryethon> "If we upset the balance of nature in our country we may as well give it to the empire because it will be no good for anything else."
[21:06:17] <+Seth> "Well by all means lets get the Master Druid in here for a discussion." ::he puts a satyrical emphasis on word Master::
[21:06:36] <+Jack> "Besides, he has a faction among the people, as well as his actual druids.  We could be asking for civil war if we don't include him in the discussion."
[21:09:13] <+Kevin> "Which, with our two tiered army, might be bitter bloodshed."
[21:10:09] <+Seth> ::Looks completely shocked, as if he can't believe his ears:: "Last time we needed the druids for discussion, with our lives on the line mind you, we had to truck through the Swamp on a hope that we might catch Chadwick. He certainly didn't take the time to discuss much now. How are we going to talk to the...man.?"
[21:11:37] <+Ryethon> "All things are not about profit, this was a serious oversight on our part."
[21:11:38] <+Seth> "We got no warning from him about the storm. How many lives where lost in that? How many could have been saved if he had told us days in advance?"
[21:12:02] <+Ryethon> "Who says that he knew?"
[21:12:23] <+Seth> "How did he know of the harbor? He's a druid."
[21:12:37] <+Ryethon> "Perhaps someone told him?
[21:13:10] <+Seth> "This is academic. He's simply not here to consult."
[21:13:24] <+Ryethon> "Not too far fetched that, with all the uproar from the harbormaster last night, I am certain that the entire town knew before we did."
[21:14:58] <+Seth> ::Sniffs in frustration:: "Talk to the man. I have nothing against it. But if he says we should all live in mud huts and worship trees, you understand I'm not taking him seriously. Even so, the Druids are not here to consult, they never are."
[21:15:38] <+Ryethon> "Trust that if we let it be know that we need to speak with him, he will know. And we do indeed need to speak with him. As a druid he holds much sway witht the common people, ag general my first act will not be to turn my army against my own country."
[21:17:53] <+Charissa> "We do need to consult him"
[21:18:50] <+Seth> ::Shrugs, but continues to sneer:: "Bah! The man is rude and filthy. He has done nothing for us. I agree to pander the man if we must to avoid conflict, but if he want to be consulted for things like this he had better make himself avaliable for consulting. We don't have time to play in the swamp every time he might be concerned."
[21:19:34] <+Ryethon> "It should be said that twice he has come to us."
[21:20:20] <+Seth> ::Nods to concede the point, but continues:: "Both times ineffectual."
[21:20:37] <+Ryethon> "The first time preceding the death of a lord. This makes me belive that what he says should be listened to."
[21:20:53] <+Ryethon> "Perhaps we should listen harder."
[21:21:41] <+Seth> "But I am in the minority here it seems. I concede. Make your call to him, I wonder if he will even be summoned."
[21:25:51] <+Coch> "I'm with you Seth, nature is here to serve man not man to serve nature"
